High-pumping world record in the constructionof the Parbati Hydroelectric Project in India

Schwing GmbH, 44647 Herne, Germany

The Gammon-India company is presently building two pressure tunnels for a hydro-electric power plant in Himachal Pradesh in Northern India on behalf of the Hydroelectric Power Corporation of India (NHPC). The Parbati river flows through the region of the sources of the Indus, Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers in the North Indian state of Himachal Pradesh and is itself a tributary of the Indus. As part of Stage II of the Parbati Hydroelectric Project, the Parbati river is being dammed and partly diverted to the generator house lower down in the vicinity of Suind. A height difference of 862 m is thereby being utilised to generate 820 MW of power plant electricity. The main features of the project are an 85 m high dam wall for damming the upper lake, a 130 m deep stilling chamber with a diameter of 17 m, a 32 km long head race tunnel with a diameter of 6.5 m and two pressure tunnels, each around 1,550 m long and 3.5 m in diameter and with a vertical height diffe rence of around 750 m.
