Sustainability considerations in the design of concretestructures

Social impact of civil engineering

The construction of concrete structures brings about significant contributions to a country’s economy. However, it has become apparent over time that some activities in the life cycle of concrete structures have a negative cumulative effect on the society and environment. In response to these negative impacts, sustainability has emerged as a guiding paradigm to create a new kind of concrete industry. Research done in the field of sustainable construction of concrete structures tends to focus on either environmental issues or economical issues. Until now, little thought has been given to social impacts. If people are considered at all, it is only regarding their health and safety. The main objective of this paper is to expound on the social impacts of a structure that need to be considered in the design process in order to contribute towards the construction of sustainable concrete structures
