The traditional prescriptive design approach for concrete structures, which links important concrete properties to limiting mix design parameters, has in recent years increasingly been questioned both by practitioners and researchers. Based on the need for more rational design approaches, a new fib Task Group has recently been established to develop guidelines for performance-based specifications for concrete. This paper presents a short overview on the background to performance-based specifications and briefly reports on a first workshop held on the topic in Leipzig, Germany.
