Variotec from Neumarkt/Oberpfalz in Germany has devised a system at the practical level for highly-insulated outer walls of precast concrete units in which vacuum insulation panels are used as the insulating material. With the integrated vacuum insulation, the wall elements at a wall thickness of 150 mm attain a U value of up to 0.06 W/m2K. As a comparison: to attain the same insulating figure with a 150 mm thick concrete wall with additionally applied polystyrene (=0,030), a 50 cm thermal insulation layer thickness would be needed!
