With 1.7 million inhabitants, Brisbane is the third-largest city in Australia, but it has the highest rate of population growth. The city, which is referred to affectionately by its citizens as ‘Brissy’, stands out due to its sub-tropical flair and attitude towards life, as well as its picturesque setting on the Brisbane River. As the host of the Expo 1988, the city experienced an immense economic upturn in the time that followed, accompanied by an exorbitant building boom that resulted on the one hand in the necessity for large infrastructure projects, but whose implementation was hampered on the other by a lack of skilled employees.
