The background to this paper is the recent increase in frost/de-icing salt damage at critical higher altitudes in Germany. Critical altitudes are taken to mean altitudes from around 800m to a maximum of 1800m above sea level, where many “active” freeze-thaw (FT) cycles occur, including snow amongst other things.
