“All in all, the foreseen addition gives rise to a monolithic building whose self-contained presence convinces in the same way as the various contextual relationships. It powerfully maintains the balance between incorporation and autonomy.” That was the reason given by the jury for its decision to implement the design by Cukrowicz Nachbaur Architekten for the extension to the voralberg museum in Bregenz. The listed existing building of the historic district authority was retained in substantial parts. The existing building was extended by two floors and the museum by a new five-storey building facing towards the city centre. The existing building, the vertical extension and the new building form a new large format with a clear and compact building figure.
