As an engineer or estimator, the initial cost is not always apparent when comparing the installed costs of alternate pipe materials for storm and sanitary sewers. There are fundamental differences between concrete pipe (rigid pipe) and plastic pipe (flexible pipe). One such difference is that rigid pipe is delivered with the majority of the structure to the jobsite, whereas flexible pipe is essentially a liner, and the structure must be built in the field. For that reason, the requirements of structural backfill are vastly different and the cost of the pipe itself tells just part of the story.
