Detailing one-storey precast industrial buildingsfor proper seismic response


Hinged beam-to-column connections

 


Following a short reference on the main principles of earthquake resistance design, a typical one-storey precast industrial building is presented, reflecting mostly the Greek and European precast technology of such buildings to be built in seismic areas. The main objective of the paper is to present details on the connections of such structures to ensure their proper response under seismic actions. A typical hinged beam-to-column connection is shown with short reference to the estimation of the bearing capacity of the dowels which constitute the primary resisting mechanism of the connection, accompanied with sketches showing the local confinement requirements of the concrete around the dowels in the column and the beam. Further details are also given on the column-to-foundation connection, as well as details on slab-to-slab and beam-to-slab connections in order to secure the diaphragmatic action of the roof.
