60 m prestressed concrete girders using a segmental construction method

Universalbeton Heringen GmbH & Co KG, Institute for Concrete Construction (IfB) at HTWK Leipzig, Germany

Modern logistics halls increasingly require their roof structure to span the entire hall width without any additional intermediate supports in order to attain great flexibility in use. For the precast concrete component industry, this is a particular challenge since the maximum span of prestressed concrete girders using a precast component construction method is generally 30 to 40 m. Greater span widths are often uneconomical or non-feasible due to significantly more complicated transport conditions and frequently limited access routes. Universalbeton Heringen GmbH & Co KG, together with the Institute for Concrete Construction at HTWK Leipzig, have succeeded in developing a girder system that will in future make span widths of up to 60 m possible. With this design, two shorter prestressed concrete segments are joined together at a construction site to create one long roof girder.
