In recent years some very interesting developments have taken place in connection to the application of new and innovative materials for prefabricated building members. With regard to the use of steel fibre reinforced concrete (SFRC), an innovative construction method for prefabricated prestressed concrete girders has been developed at the Institute for Building Materials, Concrete Structures and Fire Protection (iBMB) of the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, using only SFRC without any additional reinforcement. In order to confirm the load bearing and the advantageous serviceability behaviour of this innovative construction method, several large-scale tests have been carried out. Furthermore, intensive numerical investigations were undertaken in order to develop design rules, especially for girders with large installation openings for technical building equipment. The advantages of this construction method are time and cost savings and an excellent concrete surface.
