New Zealand has seen a 15% reduction in carbon emissions associated with Portland cement production since 2005 despite concrete production increasing by 13% during the same period. This has been achieved by better process efficiencies at cement factories and replacing less efficient production facilities. Combining these developments with better use of SCMs could help reduce NZ carbon emissions by a further 15% before 2030. Achieving this will require better use of both industrial and natural SCMs in concrete construction.
