It is one of the Deutsche Bahn AG’s most ambitious infrastructure plans: the new and upgraded ICE (Inter City Express) railway route between Munich and Berlin. The ‘German Unity Traffic Project’ is intended to shorten the travelling time between the two cities to less than four hours. The main focus of the building work is currently concentrated on the 123 kilometre long section between Erfurt and Halle/Leipzig. The project is scheduled to be completed in 2011 following a construction period of three years.
