The need for durable, efficient and safe construction provides a strong foundation for Elematic’s business. In 1959, brothers Pentti and Pauli Virtanen founded Toijalan Teräsvalmiste (TTV). They saw opportunity in the demand for precast production technology following Finland’s rapid urbanisation. The company manufactured table molds for facades and wall elements.TTV’s first substantial project in 1964 – a complete precast element factory – marked a leap in the industrialisation of precast construction. It was the first of its kind, with production lines equipped with moving molds and conveyor belt technology. TTV delivered the first battery molds to Sweden in 1967, but the big international breakthroughs, in Eastern Europe and the Middle East, happened in the mid-1970s. Elematic’s trademark hollow-core slab line was developed in 1971. In the 1980s, TTV led the world in hollow-core production technology, enabling more variation in precast elements and introducing shear compaction.
Finland’s Paraisten Kalkki (later Partek) owned the company until 1993 when Partek joined forces with Lohja to form Partek Concrete Engineering (PCE). The 1990s was significant as PCE adopted industrial design in its product development, a move that set its first extruder EL900E and the whole Elematic brand apart from competition. PCE adopted the name of its strongest product, becoming Elematic, in 2003.
Elematic today has production plants in Finland and India and offices in the US, Germany, China, Russia, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2012, it was chosen to deliver the world’s largest precast factory for the Bishmayah New City housing project in Iraq.
From the small Finnish town of Toijala, Elematic technology is now used in more than 100 countries in six continents. Its growth powered by ambitious product development and the constant search for new markets, Elematic continues to lead innovation in the precast industry.
