Unique concrete structures tailor-made withthe use of SCC, robots and digital architecture

Innovative production technology

The paper describes a radically new concept of producing unique, tailor-made concrete structures with complex geometries using an industrialized and cost-effective approach based on robots, ICT and advanced concrete technology. The innovative aspect is to produce con crete moulds directly from the architects CAD drawings, and thereby allow new and front-end architecture in normal housing with no extra costs for the citizen. It also makes it possible to use new, simpler and re-usable formwork materials other than traditional timber or steel. Added to these new developments is the vast and relatively untapped potential in the use of self-compacting concrete (SCC). A Danish R&D project has been the proof-of-concept with theoretical analyses and demonstrations of prototypes. Medium 2009 a major European project called TailorCrete has started. It will upscale the technology and research the various technological aspects necessary for the concept, such as formwork materials, release agents, robot software, tailor-making SCC and new reinforcement materials and systems. The paper will present the vision, the preliminary results and the content of the future work in the TailorCrete project.
