The county of Cornwall in the “far” south of England has a long history of industrial innovation based on tin and copper mining that has now all but ceased. Cornwall is still known the world over for the quality of its china clay (kaolin), the raw material for such famous names as “Wedgwood”, “Spode“, “Worcester”, Doulton”, etc. Cornwall and its people tend to see themselves as separate from the frenetic pace of life further “north”. This and the natural beauty of Cornwall have seen tourism become the most important source of income. The wonderful coast line with secluded bays and small harbour communities are a delight. There are numerous country mansions with gardens open to the public, but the main attraction must be the world famous “Eden Project” near St Austell, one of the most popular tourist attractions in the United Kingdom. It is located in a disused quarry and consists of a large scale environmental complex housed in two giant transparent geodesic domes, one emulating a tropical climate and the other a warm temperate climate, that house plant species from around the world.
