History of Strands Diameter and Spacing in Precast/Prestressed Girder

Technical Development in the United States of America

The objective of this paper is to present the history of strands diameter and spacing in precast/prestressed girder applications in the United States. Strands diameter, horizontal and vertical spacing directly affect the transfer and development lengths of girders, which in turn would control its design, fabrication, and erection aspects and procedures. Thus, significant amount of research projects were conducted by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and State Departments of Transportation (DOTs) to investigate the effect of strands diameter and spacing on girder’s capacity and relevant design, fabrication, and erection issues.
