Special cements for high-performanceconcretes

Dyckerhoff AG, 65203 Wiesbaden, Germany

Cement of the type that we know today has been around for about 150 years. It began as plain Portland cement, and developed through iron Portland cement and blast furnace cement, yet the starting materials – Portland cement clinker and granulated blast furnace slag – remained almost unchanged for decades. Other materials were added later, firstly oil shale and later including synthetic pozzolanic stones such as microsilica and fly-ash. Cements having special properties are created, for instance, through mixing a variety of primary and secondary materials, sometimes specially prepared, or simply through the careful selection and preparation of locally available raw materials.
