As of today, quality control of fresh concrete is primarily based on empirical and very simple test methods, both performed in the concrete plant and on the construction site. Worldwide, the flow table test – or one of its derivatives – is used as the main test method. In addition to determining the flow diameter as a measure of consistency, the fresh concrete is primarily assessed by visual inspection. In order to overcome the deficits of this subjective fresh concrete testing, an image-based method for determining concrete properties was developed and validated. In addition to the flow diameter, extensive information can be derived from the surface properties of fresh concrete.
