Influence of additional water content when using superabsorbent Polymers (SAP) in concrete

Part 2: Hardened concrete properties

Superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) represent an alternative multifunctional powdered concrete admixture for producing air-entrained concrete. They can simultaneously create an artificial air-void system and regulate the concrete’s water balance. SAPs have the ability to absorb and store many times their own weight in aqueous solutions. In addition to enhancing freeze-thaw and freeze-de-icing salt resistance [2, 3], artificial air-void systems can also influence mechanical and other durability-related properties. The pore system created by SAPs due to the subsequent release of absorbed water can affect the mechanical properties of hardened concrete in a manner similar to that of conventional air entrainment. Compared with standard air-entraining admixtures (e.g., based on surfactants), the reduction in compressive strength occurs at a comparable level [4]. This study presents a systematic investigation into the influence of superabsorbent polymers on hardened concrete properties, when used as an alternative air entrainment system. Besides compressive strength and freeze-thaw resistance, additional durability-related properties are examined. To compensate for the reduced workability associated with SAP use, the effect of providing extra mixing water to offset the SAP water uptake is also evaluated. The quantity of additional water was varied systematically according to the absorption capacity of the SAP. The resulting effects on fresh concrete properties were discussed in Part 1 of this contribution, while the present paper focuses on the corresponding effects on hardened concrete performance.
