Robot-assisted research facility for automated production of adaptive concrete modules

This article presents a research facility in which automated processes for the production of geometrically and mechanically variable (adaptive) reinforced concrete modules have been implemented. The facility is equipped with three industrial robots and reproduces the entire process chain of reinforcement, formwork, and accelerated curing, including integrated quality assurance controls. In a process involving two cooperating robots, reinforcement elements are welded automatically, enabling customised reinforcement layouts. The developed formwork system allows for variable cross-sections and surface finishes (adaptivity), while maintaining dimensional deviations of less than 2 mm. Process-integrated geometric and mechanical conformity assessments using a laser line sensor, stereo camera, and rebound hammer are employed for quality assurance and can also be used to regulate individual subprocesses. A curing chamber with controllable temperature and humidity conditions accelerates the hardening of the concrete to durations of as little as approximately 1 hour. For operation of the facility, and already in advance during the construction of the physical installation, a digital plant model is used for simulation and virtual commissioning.
