In the past 25 years, many exciting new technologies for the concrete industry have been introduced into the market; some valuable, and some with questionable merit. Revolutionary, game changing technologies are often received with skepticism. However now, due to the carbon dioxide (CO2) burden from portland cement production, increasing consideration is given to new technologies demonstrating a reduction in the carbon footprint from cement production. Often, this is addressed through the addition of supplementary cementitious materials and/or admixtures incorporated into ready mixed concrete and concrete products, with sometimes mixed results. After years of research, innovative developments are beginning to reshape the traditional landscape, and are offering significant improvements in environmental benefits and sustainability.
