Reduction of minimum reinforcement in lightweight concrete elements through use of steel fibres

Steel fibre-reinforced lightweight concrete

The dead load and thermal conductivity of concrete structural elements is reduced by the use of lightweight concrete, which brings many benefits. If steel fibres are also added, the normally brittle material becomes a ductile building material. Steel fibres are basically able to replace the minimum reinforcement to ensure ductile component behaviour and crack width limitation. The conditions required to replace the conventional steel bar reinforcement used in lightweight concrete elements with steel fibres were created in a cooperation project supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (BMWi).
