Automated and demands-based production of carbon reinforcements in a precast plant

Robotics in the building industry

The introduction of fibre reinforced concrete in the building industry not only influences construction methods but also production and manufacturing processes. Whereas fibres are already established in the fibre-plastic sector for the building industry the new carbon fibre, in the shape of textile sheets and rods, require new work routines and a different quality in handling the material. This is followed by the urge for cost-effectiveness and thus an optimized production in order to be able to guarantee reproducible quality and to keep costs at a reasonable level. A crucial step in the new production chain is the method of the reinforcement manufacturing which still is, compared to the production of steel reinforcements, very manufacture-like. The challenge is to develop an automated, cost-saving and time-efficient production method for the production of carbon reinforced structures by the direct and load case-oriented laying and fixation of carbon yarns. Due to the nearly scrap-free draping of the reinforcement into a new formwork system, very high degrees of freedom are achieved with a simultaneous cost degression. It provides the basis to integrate the process into automated circulation pro-cesses within a precast plant. With the new carbon reinforcement produced by using the newly developed production technology, with regard to the input of carbon fibres, material savings are estimated at up to 55 % compared to the use of conventional textile reinforcement structures.
