Sustainable construction – Back to mankind

BIBM - European Federation for Precast Concrete, 1040 Brussels, Belgium

Whilst developing the three pillars of sustainability – people, profit, planet – architects, contractors and town planners shall always take into account the final objective: the fulfilment of man’s needs. In the present fight between construction materials to be acknowledged as the most sustainable solution for the built environment, the different sectors have chosen their strategy. The timber sector claims to be “most sustainable” because it is the one providing the solution for carbon dioxide. The metal sector claims the same for its possibility to be “100 % recyclable”. The clay sector is concentrating its communication on the “long service life”. And the concrete sector? Concrete is an “all-round” material, offering undisputed advantages in several aspects of sustainable construction; and it may be difficult to find “the” advantage of concrete.
