The reduction of CO2 in combination with the reduction of dependence on imported energy in the form of gas and oil is of paramount inte- rest to all industries. Savings in energy consumption and CO2 emissions help to increase production efficiency, but also have a positive effect on the image of the product and of the manufacturer. Kemmler is known throughout Germany as an extremely innovative company that is not always content with the solutions offered by the market. For this reason, a research project on energy and CO2savings was started toget- her with the companies Rothmund and Prilhofer Consulting and the KIT (Karlsruhe Institute of Technology), which was funded by the German Federal Environmental Foundation (Deutsche Bundesstiftung Umwelt). The aim of the project was to develop and construct new and inno- vative steel pallet systems in order to reduce significantly energy and resource consumption. Since Kemmler has several pallet carousel sys- tems, it was possible to build a prototype and test it under live operational conditions.
