Concrete pavements in the Arctic climate

Production and paving influenced by snow and ice

Winter production of pavers cause several challenges due to snow and ice in the raw materials. Unless stored under a roof, sand and aggre- gate have to be cleaned after snowfall. Additional costs for energy to heat production and hardening localities are unavoidable. Production capacity in winter conditions are significantly reduced due to longer hardening times and longer mixing time. Construction of trafficable areas are dependent on materials without snow and ice. On average only the coastal areas in the south and west of Norway have such conditions in the winter. A short season requires high flexibility in capacity of labour and machines. Changes in climate to more heavy rainfalls and milder winters opens the market for permeable pavements in Northern areas.
