One of the main advantages of Self Compacting Concrete (SCC) and Self Compacting Mortar (SCM) is its ability to fill all kind of shapes and formworks while maintaining an aesthetically appealing surface. This unique property of self compacting suspensions can be used for various applications. For example, it is possible to produce interior or exterior design objects with this material. If fibers are incorporated into the mortar its flexural properties are improved so that normal reinforcement might not be necessary. Much thinner but still rigid elements can be realized with this material. Self compacting mortar can be used for the manufacturing of aesthetically appealing kitchen work surfaces and sinks, uniquely designed cupboards, wash stands and shelf, tasteful lamps and other interior or exterior design objects. This paper deals with the development of a self compacting mortar which contains fibers and Icelandic light weight aggregate. The mortar was developed by rheological approach. Rheological measurements on all suspensions were done in a coaxial cylinder system and an impeller based rheometer. It is shown how important the paste volume is to achieve self compacting properties, in particular when fibers or flaky aggregates are used. Shelf and stools were produced with this material.
