Recent developments in data-logging covermetersand the interpretation of results

Elcometer Limited, Manchester, M43 6BU, England

Covermeters are used for the non-destructive testing of old and new concrete structures as described in BS 1881 Part 204 [1]. Steel reinforcement bars can be detected using a pulsed electromagnetic field generated by a coil. Search coils detect the resulting eddy currents induced in the bars and the location, orientation, depth (cover) and diameter of the bars can be determined from this signal. New covermeter designs have added features including data logging and analysis. In addition, Half-Cell potential measurements to determine the likelihood that corrosion is taking place can be undertaken using the Covermeter.
