The durability of reinforced concrete structures, which can predominantly be linked to the resistance against reinforcement corrosion, remains a major concern for the modern construction industry. Recent developments show that the concrete industry is slowly moving away from the prescriptive design concept, in which durability specifications are limited to strength classes and mix design parameters. Performance-based design and quality control of concrete durability, on the other hand, is based on an assessment of relevant material properties of the concrete, which can be used to predict the potential design life of the structure. A number of test methods have been developed worldwide and are used to assess the potential durability of concrete members in the design stage and during or after construction. This paper presents a practical example on the application of the South African Oxygen Permeability Test for design and quality control of precast concrete highway barriers.
