Using infrared thermometersin concrete construction

Temperature measurements for quality assessment

Many aspects of concrete construction require we monitor temperatures so we can meet specifications. Some examples of specifications, in the USA, which require temperature measurements are: 1) Subgrade temperatures must be above freezing prior to concrete placement, 2) Steel reinforcement and steel forms must be less than 120F (50 °C) prior to concrete placement, 3) Concrete temperatures should be maintained between 40- 90F (4-32 °C) during placement, and 4) monitoring the curing procedures of cold weather concrete is necessary during the first 3-7 days after placement. The authors have found that the quickest and easiest way to estimate temperatures have been to use Infrared Thermometers (IR thermometers).
