When the structural safety or fitness for use of a structure can no longer be guaranteed, then reinforcement is usually necessary. The causes and reasons which make reinforcement necessary may be an increase in the loading or changes to the structural design of the system as a result of changes in use, planning or construction errors or deformation caused by external effects such as settlement, earthquakes, impact or reinforcement with corrosion damage. The objective is to find a cost-effective solution which requires little effort and which will limit further use of the structure as little as possible.
