The residents of Turkey are all too aware of the seismic activity in the region in which they call home. This area is as active as the San Andreas in California, USA and has proven to be just as devastating. The 1999 !zmit earthquake killed more than 17,000 people and devastated sur- rounding cities, leaving thousands homeless. While not as deadly, the 2011 Van earthquake demonstrated the deficiencies in Turkish hous- ing, where more than 11,000 buildings sustained damage in the region, of which more than 6,000 were uninhabitable.
