Carbon-reinforced variable bridge module for small span lengths

VariBridge – lightweight precast concrete construction

The demand for durable bridges with small to medium span lengths has been increasing in Germany in recent years. The implementation of state- and municipality-specific bicycle path concepts currently requires provision of a large number of bridges over existing traffic routes and bodies of water. The German federal state of North Rhine-Westphalia has a leading role in the planning and construction of new high-speed bicycle paths. This role is related to the “Local Mobility 2.0” concept, which comes with high regional investments in the construction and expansion of bicycle paths and high-speed bicycle paths in the coming years, and which is also associated with a high demand for durable and affordable bridge solutions. In addition, the north of the German federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate as well as southern North Rhine-Westphalia saw a disastrous flooding event in July 2021, which damaged and frequently completely destroyed many hundreds of bridge structures. This flood of the century drastically increased the need for small bridges in this region even further.
