New concretes for special requirements

Modern concrete technology

Around the year 1990 new perspectives arose with regards to the material “concrete”. By adding silicafume, in combination with modern superplasticizers, a concrete compressive strength over 100 MPa could be reached, whereas simultaneously the workability remained satisfactory. Many research projects were initiated, intending to explore this promising material. Meanwhile the properties of concrete in strength classes until C105 have no secrets anymore. Most codes of practice, including the new Eurocode for Concrete Structures, have therefore extended their scope to this strength class. It turned out that this extension was not only a new record, but meant as well the start of a new way of thinking. The next step in the development of modern concretes was Self Compacting Concrete (SCC), followed by Ultra High Performance Fibre Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC).
