In July 2010, the city of Christchurch in New Zealand has started two main projects to upgrade the city sewer system. The city council is about halfway on a 15-year programme of wastewater projects costing in excess of 150 mio. NZD. The Fendalton Duplication is one of two projects, the other are being the Western Interceptor. They will significantly reduce the frequency of wastewater overflow into the Avon during bad weather by reducing the load on the existing system. The Fendalton Duplication will connect with the Western Interceptor.
