Sewer design and concrete pipeselection for durability

Part 2 – Design example

Part 1 of the paper reviewed design principles and gave guidelines for ensuring that sewers are designed and concrete sewer pipes are selected to provide buried infrastructure that is durable. It reviewed key factors such as vertical and horizontal alignment to avoid corrosive conditions and the need for understanding ground and installation conditions to ensure adequate pipe strength. It also dealt with issues of concrete pipe corrosion due to biogenic acid generation – a common problem in many large sewers. Part 2 extends the content of Part 1, and should be read with Part 1. Recent full scale experiments in a South African sewer are reviewed and implications for design are outlined. If the designer has due regard to all the parameters affecting concrete sewer pipe durability, it is possible to design and produce durable concrete pipes that will last many decades.
