Columns and masts made of ultra-high-strength spun concrete

Results of a research project

Otto & Schlosser received the first patent for the spun concrete process in 1907 for the manufacture of overhead line pylons and lampposts [1]. The advantages of spun concrete are primarily the dense, smooth surface of the concrete and its high strength and durability. Because of these characteristics, spun concrete is increasingly being used in modern construction, since it facilitates the production of very efficient and yet at the same time aesthetic structures. The architects and clients have a choice of a wide variety of possible colours and designs of concrete surface offered by the factories (Fig. 1). The shape of the column cross-section is not limited to circular, since four-plus-sided and oval cross-sectional shapes (Figure 1 (right)) can also be produced.
