The so-called Frauendorf, an ensemble of low-rise buildings with around 1,800 apartments, which drew particular attention due to their colourful painting, were built in 1972 in the Olympiapark in Munich to house the female athletes. Following the sporting events the bungalows were used as student accommodation – until 2007. Since the development, now over 35 years old, could no longer be renovated and maintained economically, the Munich Student’s Union invited tenders for the renewal of the buildings in 2007. The idea was for the 800 existing apartments, which form a group of listed buildings, to be dismantled – apart from a few buildings designated as example monuments – and to be newly erected on the same area using the fair-faced concrete precast construction method.
