For a variety of reasons, the international cement and concrete sector is looking for more collaboration in Africa. The continent has got a young and fast-growing population and the rapid need for habitat and urbanisation requires immediate implementation of residential building and infrastructure construction. The relatively low number of established standards and codes related to the built environment in most African countries to date also offers the opportunity to implement innovative and green technologies and avoid mistakes from the past [1]. Despite the potentials and the high interest, companies are often reluctant to starting business in Africa, mostly based on a lack of information and networks. In two consecutive parts, this article highlights the current situation of the precast sector in West Africa with focus on Nigeria and Ghana in the first part, followed by an outlook on relevant potentials of the precast industry to accelerate sustainable concrete production in the region in the second part.
