The use of recycled aggregates to produce concrete products

Sustainable concrete production

Significant amounts of construction and demolition waste (C&DW) are generated from the construction of new buildings and the demolition of existing structures. C&DW primarily consists of materials such as concrete, masonry, mortar, timber, ceramics, plastics, metals, and other substances [1]. Despite its inert nature, C&DW poses environmental challenges due to its large volume and issues associated with landfill disposal and contributes the largest stream of waste worldwide, accounting for around 30-40% of total solid waste. To address this challenge, a paradigm shift towards a reuse and recycle approach is imperative within the concrete industry, thereby facilitating the exploration of alternative materials like recycled aggregate.
