Carbonation-Cured Cements Enabling Sustainable Manufactured Concrete Products

Low-Carbon Innovations in Concrete Manufacturing

A path is proposed for lower carbon emissions for concrete block pavers and other low water/cement ratio (zero slump) manufactured concrete products through carbonated calcium silicate cement conforming to ASTM C1905 Standard Specification for Cements that Require Carbonation Curing. ASTM C1905 cements can be used as binder in the manufacture of block paving units, slabs/flags, roof tiles, masonry, and segmental retaining wall units as well as larger precast concrete products such as hollow core slabs and railroad sleepers. Curing generally requires 24 hours or less, rather than days, to meet ASTM specifications for strength and durability. In addition, there is no primary efflorescence. The absence of efflorescence is especially important to long-term performance of high-visibility, manufactured concrete products such as concrete block paving. This article demonstrates the beneficial use of carbonated cement in commercial concrete block paving production with CO2 capturing as much as 25% of the cement mass.
