Microbially induced concrete corrosion (MICC) is a biologically driven deterioration mechanism that continues to challenge the durability of concrete sewer and wastewater infrastructure. Although Portland cement concrete is inherently durable, prolonged exposure to sewer environments can result in accelerated surface degradation, loss of section, and premature rehabilitation. Decades of research have established the biological and chemical mechanisms responsible for MICC, and current efforts increasingly focus on evaluating material‑level strategies that can delay or disrupt this process.
