Planning criteria for the choice of materials for durable sewers

Advantages of concrete

The question as to which piping system or which material is the more suitable under the respective conditions in sewers appears in many cases to be a question of belief that is often not answered by the objective consideration of the advantages and disadvantages – often resulting in technical and economic disadvantages for the operator. The individual selection of a suitable pipe system is part of the planner’s work when planning the property, and requires him to have detailed knowledge of the characteristics of the system, since these have a fundamental effect on the operation, construction method technology, stability and service life of the structural system. There is no ‘universal’ pipe material for every application case in sewers, which means that the person responsible must check carefully in each case which pipe material best fulfils the requirements for the respective construction activity. In addition to that, sufficient and evaluable experience is not always available; whereas pipes made of concrete, steel reinforced concrete and stoneware have been used for over 130 years, as a result of which corresponding experience values are available, pipes made of polymer materials have only been installed to an appreciable extent for the last 40 years. Pipes made of concrete have proven themselves and are technically advantageous and economical in practically all cases of municipal wastewater disposal today. Under special boundary conditions, however, alternative materials and corrosion protection systems are also to be considered. A decision-making aid exists for the support of the selection process, taking into account the various criteria.
