Waterproofing Las Vegas’ New Urban Community

Thirty million tourists visit Las Vegas each year but few know that the below the sandy desert is a shallow aquifer generated by excess runoff. In other words, Las Vegas is a natural oasis. Merely 50 feet below is groundwater trapped by impermeable clay and a sedimentary hardpan. This aquifer became a hot topic as developers were planning the construction of CityCenter, the largest privately-financed construction project in the history of the United States of $11 billion dollars. This urban community has over 1.2 million cubic yards of concrete which is equivalent to 120,000 concrete-mixing trucks and enough to build a four-foot sidewalk from Las Vegas, to New York City and back again. When owners of Las Vegas’ massive new CityCenter development were planning construction, they knew that waterproofing concrete would be a vital consideration.
