Massive concreting in hot climates, a double case study

Mapei Corporation, Deerfield Beach, FL 33442, USA

Two recent large projects have faced very similar issues with their massive concreting works. The Panama Canal’s third phase of locks construction (between Panama City and Colon, Panama), as well as the Ethiopian mega hydro project of Gibe III (Omo River Valley, southwest of Addis Ababa), are iconic and massive structures. In both cases, these projects used concrete mixes with highly or irregularly absorbent raw materials (aggregates and/or mineral additions). Both projects had strict specifications for the setting times, and the concrete mixes’ fresh properties had to be designed for placement with conveyor belts. And, most significantly, both these projects were executed in hot tropical climates.
