Uses of concrete in wastewater treatment systems

Materials for sewer pipes and manholes

The total length of the existing public sewer network in Germany is approximately 550,000 kilometres and has a value of about € 680 billion. According to the evaluation of a DWA Survey in 2009 [1], the investment required for renovation of these systems is around € 67 billion. A comparable financial investment from the private sector is expected. Characteristic of the water economy is the extremely high proportion of fixed costs: approximately 75 to 85% of the total costs are incurred regardless of the volume of wastewater [2], [3], [4]. In order to ensure that sewage disposal and treatment systems remain safe and economic in the long term, the selection of suitable materials is crucial. Because of its diversity and the degree of variation of its properties, concrete may be an appropriate material for the production of new systems and the renovation of existing facilities.
