Selecting concrete mix designs for improved sustainability

A simplified mix design procedure

The design for more sustainable infrastructure requires the use of an optimization model to improve the structural geometry, concrete mix- design constituents, and hardened properties of concrete, such as its compressive strength and durability. However, the optimization process may present an arduous task to practising engineers and concrete manufacturers who may not be conversant with optimization techniques. This study recognizes the need for a simplified design approach that can be applied in routine design of reinforced concrete structures. This simplified design process involves the selection of the optimum binder type and water/binder ratio for a given concrete grade.
