The first Brazilian plant for the production of precast concrete elements went into operation more than 50 years ago. Since then, numerous efforts have been made to advance the precast industry and to industrialise the Brazilian construction industry. This development is not yet over. The industry is still working hard in different areas, both political and commercial, to advance the construction system which it represents. Initial efforts were in the areas of standardisation, quality certification, safety, the environment and technological development. Current attention is on methodological aspects. Today’s construction industry situation in Brazil is unique. Flexibility is required in residential build - ing and civil engineering projects. Industrialization of the building industry is becoming ever more necessary due to lack of skilled labour. There are therefore opportunities in different areas of the building industry in which prefabricated concrete elements can help meet tight deadlines and provide better quality than conventional building methods. It has also been possible to guarantee architectural aspects so that creativity and plasticity can be combined with aesthetics.
