Circulation areas with large format paving elements from concrete

In the last 10 to 20 years, large format paving elements have been increasing employed for constructing circulation routes in Germany. This can be ascribed, in particular, to the design specifications of circulation area planners. As with all engineering projects in the field of circulation route construction – especially when paving blocks or slabs are to be utilised –, this construction method’s particular role is to harmonise creative desires or specifications with what is possible or necessary in terms of construction engineering so that a permanent, functionally operative structure may be attained. Engineering works comprising large formats fall into the “special construction method” category in Germany. Their growing popularity prompted the Research Association for Roads and Traffic (Forschungsgesellschaft für Straßen- und Verkehrswesen, FGSV) to begin preparing a set of regulations for this purpose at the end of 2007. The Code of Practice for Area Surfacing with Large Formats (CP ASLF) was published at the end of 2013. Since that time, the term “Large Formats” has been utilised for large format paving elements in circulation route construction.
